Memorandums from the MyData Global meetings

Here are the memorandums capturing the most significant agreements made in the past MyData Global meetups. The memorandums are in the order of the “newest first”, but in order to see the continuum it is advised to read first Berlin, then Aarhus and last the Lyon memorandum.

We invite all to the Slack community to further discuss these and other topics http://mydata.org/slack.

Lyon Memorandum (June 2018)

After the Meeting in Lyon, June 19th-20th 2018

The three key decisions from the Lyon meetup are:

Decision nr. 1. (founding meeting of the MyData international organisation):

History in the making! After two days of intense discussions, in the closing round of The Lyon meetup, we agreed that the MyData community is mature enough so that we can and should officially establish the international not-for-profit organisation during this year’s MyData conference in Helsinki. The founding meeting of the new association will be organised in Helsinki August 29-31 2018.

Decision nr. 2. (open preparation groups of MyData international):

In order to prepare the membership strategy, first year business-plan and the by-laws (rules) of the MyData international organisation we set up groups that are open and active during the summer. If you want to join and contribute in making MyData organisation real join one or more of the groups (expected contribution is 10 hours of active time during June-August 2018):

Membership group, (chaired by Sarah Medjek and Emma Gautier)

First online meeting: Monday June 25th 2018, 10AM CET

Slack-channel: #membership

Business-plan group, (chaired by Teemu Ropponen)

First online meeting: Friday June 29th 2018, 4PM CET

Slack-channel: #shadow-board

By-laws group (chaired by Antti ‘Jogi’ Poikola)

First online meeting: Tuesday July 3rd 2018, 9AM CET

Slack-channel: #by-laws

The discussions and online meetings will be held in MyData global Slack, join here: mydata.org/slack

Torino Memorandum (April 2018)

After the Meeting in Torino, April 12th-13th 2018

In the Torino meetup we made three significant decisions:

Decision nr. 1. (develop governance mechanisms):

MyData Global needs mechanisms to identify, discuss and take positions also on hard topics which may divide opinions within the community. Lightweight, inclusive and transparent decision making and governance is necessary already before formally incorporating MyData legal entity. We will identify key topics and create processes and places for hard discussions before the next community meeting (Lyon June 2018). MyData declaration is the base of our shared principles and the governance mechanisms will be used to develop next versions of the declaration.

Decision nr. 2. (two tracks: industry alliance and local hubs):

In the Berlin meetup (March 2017 ) we decided to unite the efforts in PIMS network meetups and the MyData conferences. Afterwards we have noticed that the resulting activity has been distantiating from some of the original PIMS network members. At the same time the network of local hubs has been growing strongly. Our conclusion is that the same modes of activity that serve the local hubs may not fully serve the needs of the PIMS network members. Before Lyon meetup Jogi and Tanel will make thorough consultations with the industry representatives to outline their expectations towards the organisation in order to re-align the development of MyData Global network.

Decision nr. 3. (keep MyData legal entity development on the fast track):

The growing MyData local hubs network urgently needs a formal governance body, processes and tools to maximise local impact and generate cross-border synergies across the networks. We aim to establish the MyData Organisation for both 1) PIMS network members as industry alliance; and 2) for the local hubs as the international palatform organisation. As described above, the two tracks are different and at the moment the clarity of expectations from the PIMS network members are being collected. We will speed up the “PIMS track” in order to keep the overall development of the MyData legal entity on the fast track. Next step: come to Lyon MyData Global Meetup to define the MyData legal entity.

Aarhus Memorandum (November 2017)

After the Meeting in Aarhus, November 23rd-24th 2017

In the Aarhus meetup we made three significant decisions:

Decision 1. (incorporate MyData legal entity):
We will establish MyData as an international NGO in a European country. The preparations for the NGO will be run over two network meetings (Turin in April and Paris in June), to launch the organization at MyData 2018 conference in Helsinki in August. Goal is to become an internationally respected and well-branded player and voice on the personal data domain. Local activity hubs form the DNA of the organization (see Decision 2) and we aim to build strong ties with other players in the ecosystem like for example Open Knowledge, Kantara, PDEC, MEF, etc.

Decision nr. 2. (formalise the MyData Local Hubs):
By the next community meeting (April 2018) we will formalize what it means to be a MyData Local Hub (by defining minimum criteria) and what are the key areas of collaboration within the MyData Global Network. There are currently 15 MyData Local Hubs, which are on different stages of development and have varying goals and activities. From the Global Network the Local Hubs are looking for inspiration, connections and collaboration. We will therefore combine materials on suggested and supported Hubs activities and facilitate cross-pollination of ideas across the Hubs.

Decision nr. 3. (focus on use cases and interoperability):
For now, we will focus on two priority action areas 1) collecting and communicating use cases and 2) curating standards for reaching minimum of interoperability between different personal data solutions. We will form “use cases” and “interoperability” working groups, that will overlap with the corresponding topic tracks in the MyData 2018 conference. The two tracks are interlinked, for instance use cases feed into the interoperability discussions, where the aim is to develop concrete and actionable support material for the MyData Declaration. The Local Hubs are engines for new use cases and for collecting and disseminating the network intelligence (ex. use-cases paper done in Denmark). The use cases will be published in a repository under mydata.org to help communicating MyData value and benefits to new stakeholders.

Berlin Memorandum (March 30)

After the Meeting in Berlin, March 30-31st 2017

Not all of us could be in Berlin in the end of April, but the conclusions of the meeting and the future roadmap are something that everyone of us should be part of.

The common main goals for this network are:

  • Unified voice: making our message more understandable by clear communication and common language – this leads to raising awareness in wider public, media etc. and market visibility for the “MyData doers”.
  • Influence: a united lobbying effort for advancing the human-centric principles in regulation, policies, standards and implementation guidelines.
  • Collective Knowledge: sharing and collaborating to increase our understanding speed up our learning – shared market analyses, user feedback and business cases.

In the Berlin meetup we made two significant agreements:

Decision nr. 1 (merging efforts):
The efforts in PIMS network meetups and the MyData conferences will be officially united. The aim is to establish a MyData Global Network as a legal entity, that can take over role of the conference organizer for the years to come and continue facilitating other smaller meetings and activities. It’s important that the established organisation is democratically driven, representing and uniting the voices of the community. It should neither be “the guys from Finland or France, or Estonia…”, nor should it be dominated just by the few strongest. The community is all of us.

Decision nr. 2 (core principles):
To foster common understanding and concretise our perspectives on human-centric data management, we the founding members, start by developing a common set of principles for for the human centric personal data (name to be defined). This will be based on the related existing principles statements (started with a workshop in Berlin), resulting in a value statement signed by organisations and individuals striving for human-centric data management in their services and processes.
